PROGRAM NOTES

Legion was composed for flutist Gina Izzo and pianist Erika Dohi, also known as RighteousGirls. The piece is fully scored for eight pianos, eight flutes, and two drum sets. However, in performance, all but two of these parts are realized via pre-recorded tracks. The result is that the instrumental forces in the work multiply over time; what seems like a simple duo becomes, by the end of the work, a densely textured soundscape. In turns ominous, driving, and celebratory, Legion counts among its musical influences the later works of Messiaen as well as the pounding beats of 1980s stadium rock.

Commissioned and premiered by RighteousGirls. Premiered at 1 Rivington Place, New York, NY (April 2019)
