PROGRAM NOTES
In seven movements:
especially upon the face
a strong and lofty wall
the windings
the giddiest grew pale
a multitude of dreams
seizing the mummer
in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel
Prince Prospero is a set of miniatures based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. Its seven brief movements each derive their musical, lyrical, and even metrical content from a particular phrase in Poe’s tale (and of course, they also correspond to the seven rooms that play an important role in structuring the story). Written for the highly idiosyncratic Tempus Continuum Ensemble, Prince Prospero takes full advantage of the unusual instrumentation, favoring timbres that would be difficult to synthesize with a more homogenous collection of instruments.
Commissioned and premiered by Tempus Continuum Ensemble. Premiered at The Cell Theater, New York, NY (May 2013).
