PROGRAM NOTES
In three movements:
Luminescence
Sun Dogs
Fata Morgana
SEA is a piece for two performers sharing one vibraphone that explores various visual phenomena associated with the open ocean. The first movement, “Luminescence,” takes its title from the ghostly glow emitted by some varieties of plankton and algae. The second movement, “Sun Dogs,” refers to an refractory effect that causes two bright vertical halos to appear on either side of the sun. The third, “Fata Morgana,” is an allusion to an optical illusion that causes large objects to appear to hover over the open ocean. Collectively, the three movements are dedicated to exploring the strangeness and mystery that results when one can no longer trust one’s own eyes.
SEA was composed in 2020 for the University of Central Florida New Music Ensemble.
